SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION of TURKEY


FOUNDATION AND PURPOSE
Sociological Association was founded on 18.01.1990 in Ankara by 11 sociologists. Initially, the general council consisted of 40 members but now this number is over 500. With its headquarters in Ankara, the Association was given the status of "association for public benefit" with the decree of the Council of  Ministers dated 10.02.1999, no 99 / 12405. It does not have branches.
In the statutes, the purpose has been stated as to contribute to the understanding, development and expansion of sociology in Turkey; to carry out scientific activities and publications in this field; and to establish cooperation and solidarity among sociologists.
The foundation has been engaged in activities in the following fields in order to achieve the abovementioned goals:

  1. To make researches in the field of sociology,
  2. To make cooperation with related disciplines and scientific branches as well as associated organizations in line with the goals,
  3. To organize scientific congresses, symposiums, seminars, conferences, open sessions or similar activities,
  4. To try to find solutions for profession-related problems of sociologists,
  5. To make publications in order to give sociological understanding in our country an effective and widespread identity,
  6. To give outright scholarships of at least 10% of the association revenue to students who have been receiving graduate or post-graduate education in the field of sociology and who have limited finance.

For ten years since the date of foundation, based on its scientific efforts, the association has had a name in the community and become an institution with an expected level of service.

It has made researches on behalf of the Prime Ministry Family Research Agency and Prime Ministry GAP Regional Development Administration, completed projects with the support of United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) and organized two national congresses, one in Ýzmir and one in Mersin. These activities have been made into a book in order to reach a higher number of people. Also, a magazine has been published twice a year under the supervision of a judge.

The association has focused on both scientific work and relations with the society so that such work can be reflected to the community. Cooperation has been made with voluntary organizations, foundations and associations in order to contribute to and take responsibility for social activities.
